Board and Supervisory Committee Track

What New Directors Need to Know about the Audit Process

According to Regulation 701.4, a credit union director is always responsible for the general direction and control of the affairs of each federal credit union. Therefore, a new director needs to know what is happening inside the credit union. But without being involved daily or micro-managing, how does a director know what is going on inside a credit union? One key way is through the auditors. This session will help you understand the full audit process to give you valuable insight into the affairs of your credit union.

BSA and Risk Management

Overseeing BSA compliance as a credit union board member is just another form of risk management. All too often, BSA training programs focus on the technical aspects of compliance, without properly discussing risk management. This session will cover risk management (NCUA expectations, seven major focuses and your role) and BSA compliance (OFAC, reporting goals and your responsibility) together. Board members and supervisory committee members who attend this session will gain a foundational understanding of risk management, which will help them better understand their role in managing the credit union’s BSA program. This session may help credit unions comply with NCUA training requirements regarding the Bank Secrecy Act.

Examine the five key components to credit union financial statements: financial condition, income, changes in members’ equity, cash flows and footnotes.

Regulatory and External Audits: Understand the Issues & Ask the Right Questions

The board has two important allies in the world of credit union governance: the external auditor and the regulatory examiner. We don’t always look at the auditors or examiners as allies, but these two groups look deeply into the inner workings of our credit unions and give the board good information about risks of which a director might otherwise be unaware. Take a look at how boards can get the most out of the audit and examination process; how to get your money’s worth from the external or CPA audit; and how to read between the lines of the federal regulatory exam. We will also look at exit conferences, what questions directors should be ready to ask and how the board can assure that management is taking corrective action on issues raised in the audit process.
